FreeWill Newsletter
Vol. 1 Issue 1
FreeWill is excited to announce and unveil the first version of our monthly newsletter! You can expect news, updates on our fundraising tools and their features, and insights from a successful nonprofit partner that you can use to boost your own fundraising program.
Partner Highlight: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
One of the great benefits of working with FreeWill is that you can gather data and insights from the entire network of FreeWill partners. This month, we're featuring AFSP and their success during a very important week in October.
The Timing
From October 21st - 28th, 2019, FreeWill and our partners celebrated National Estate Planning Awareness Week (NEPAW). The National Association of Estate Planners and Councils established NEPAW in 2008 to teach Americans about making estate plans.
The Tactic
When it comes to the holidays, NEPAW isn't exactly a household name, but we saw an opportunity to help our partners highlight the bequest tool and the amazing free service it offers to their supporters by sending an email and encouraging recipients to make their wills. It also provided a natural sense of urgency – it is National Estate Planning Awareness WEEK after all, so there was a clear deadline to email recipients and get their wills done within the next few days.
The Result
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) saw tremendous success! On Monday, October 21st, AFSP sent an email to their list of 500,000 individuals and, as a result, 12 supporters created charitable bequests totaling more than $250,000 through FreeWill's bequest tool.
The Takeaway
First and foremost, the best way to drive will-writing and bequesting is by sending outreach. You won't get something if you don't ask for it! Secondly, it is extremely helpful to give your supporters a reason to start their will now and a deadline so they actually follow through. Even something like NEPAW goes a long way toward priming your donors to start thinking about planned giving and their estates in general.
Way to go AFSP! We are so excited to continue working with you and supporting your incredible work of saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide.

FreeWill Updates: Partner Portal
Last quarter, we released a new tool to help all of our partners become as successful as possible! The FreeWill Partner Portal official launched on September 30th, 2019.
What is it?
The Partner Portal is a resource for you and your organization to track your results and activity with FreeWill in real time. You can see a high-level overview of the page views, number of gifts, amount raised, and a detailed overview of the donors for Wills, QCDs, and Stock Gifts, as well as Contingent Gifts (gifts made to your organization if the person or entity designated as the primary beneficiary passes before the bequestor) and Funeral Wishes (gifts that will be made to your organization in lieu of flowers at a funeral).
Why should I be excited?
This new tool gives you the power to not only see gifts as they come in, but also to measure how successful your different campaigns are. You'll be able to see which messages and which media drive the best return on your investment so you can optimize your campaigns as you go, allocate your budget toward what works and away from what doesn't, and drive better results than you ever have before!
How do I access it?
Visit Freewill.com/Portal/Login to access your organization's portal. Your strategist should have already reached out to you about setting up your account in the partner portal. It takes about 24 hours for all the information to be updated. If you have further questions about the Partner Portal and want more information, please contact your strategist and they would be more than happy to help you!
