2021 QCD Report

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) from IRAs are the fastest growing area of philanthropy — and they’re an incredible opportunity for nonprofits to fundraise more effectively this year.

This report analyzes qualitative survey results from hundreds of nonprofits professionals as well as QCD gifts made on the FreeWill platform, showing continued growth through 2021.

Here are some takeaways:

Organizations with $1 million to $10 million in total revenue reported the average size of a QCD was $10,747 in 2020 — up 47% from our 2019 survey analysis.
In 2020, the surge in QCD giving started to slow down, and the percent increase in average gift count was lower than in prior years.
32% said that increased donor awareness of QCDs had a positive impact on the number of gifts they received.
Survey respondents who said their organization marketed QCDs four or more times reported receiving at least ten gifts last year.
