5 tips to prepare for Coronavirus that won’t break the bank

Here at FreeWill, we are always thinking about cost-conscious ways to protect those we love. Here are some things you can share with your donors to help them protect themselves and those they care about:

1. Wash your hands with soap and water for a full 20 seconds.

Good times to wash include after you go to the bathroom, before eating, after blowing your nose or sneezing, or after you've been touching surfaces in public areas. Try singing Happy Birthday to yourself in your head. Or for additional fun, try the chorus of "Jolene" by Dolly Parton: "Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene / I'm begging of you please don't take my man / Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene / Please don't take him just because you can."

2. Don't touch your face.
The most common ways to receive the virus are through mouth, nose, and eyes.

3. Use alcohol if you can't get hand sanitizer.
Packs of Purell hand sanitizer have been as high as $350 on Amazon. It turns out the most important active ingredient in most hand sanitizers is alcohol. To make your own, combine 2/3 cup 99% rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol, 1/3 cup 100% pure aloe vera gel, and optionally, eight to ten drops of essential oil for smell. Voila!

4. Good ole' rice and beans.
The goal of stocking up on items like groceries and toilet paper is not for fear of stock-outs, but rather, to avoid going outside if you are quarantined or would like to avoid getting sick. One cup of rice and beans has ten grams of fiber, a variety of antioxidants and vitamins, and "complete protein", or all the amino acids that your body needs to create various types of proteins. When bought in bulk, each serving of rice and beans could cost less than $0.40.

5. Be kind.
Call someone you haven't talked to in a long time. Open the door for someone. Tell someone you love them, just because. Always free, and takes ten seconds.
